Purification Program FAQs

Our 21-day purification program includes eating whole, organic and unprocessed foods and eliminating foods that may cause a concern in some individuals; taking supplements with whole foods and other ingredients; and drinking plenty of water. You will eat a variety of vegetables and fruit for the first 10 days, with select proteins added on day 11. It is a structured program that brings healthy lifestyle habits into focus as it is designed to purify, nourish, and help patients maintain a healthy body weight.* 

Our SP Detox Balance™ is a detox cleanse that delivers whole food-based nutrition that provides the body with the additional nutritional support it may need to metabolize and expel toxins safely during each of the three phases of metabolic detoxification.* It provides all the same ingredients as the purification program but in higher doses. Both programs include a program guide which provides resources such as sample meal ideas and a shopping list etc. The program has two options: a 28-day or 10-day plan. 

Absolutely! While you have the option of reintroducing lean meats on day 11 of the program, if you are vegan or vegetarian you can simply continue with the meat-free recipes from days 1-10. While we recommend continuing to avoid dairy throughout the duration of the program, if you feel the need for additional protein after day 10 you have the option to add in extra servings of SP Complete or SP Complete DF.  

 Standard Process products labeled as Vegan are devoid of animal-based tissue, animal-based gelatin, or fish oils. 

They are also devoid of animal-based ingredients such as dairy, eggs, honey, beeswax, and lanolin.

Standard Process products labeled as Vegetarian are considered lacto-ovo vegetarian, which means they are devoid of animal-based tissue, animal-based gelatin, or fish oil. They may contain animal-based ingredients such as dairy, eggs, honey, beeswax, or lanolin.

It is a common misconception that the first 10 days of the Purification Program are 'lower' protein days. Rather, they are a reduction of animal-based proteins, which can be a bit more inflammatory in nature for individuals who aren't necessarily in optimal health. We recommend reducing animal protein intake for the first 10-days to support detoxification and purification. Animal proteins can also be more challenging for some individuals to digest, so we recommend eliminating them for the first 10 days to provide a gentle 'reset' to the gut. Because only gentle exercise is recommended during the Purification Program, high protein intake to support muscle gain or training isn’t necessary. During those first 10 days, the nutritional shakes can contribute up to 30 grams per day, and adding chia seeds, hemp seeds, or pumpkin seeds could boost this content even more

Both fiber options offer a blend of soluble and insoluble fiber to support digestion, toxin elimination and microbiome health. Gastro Fiber pairs psyllium, fennel, fenugreek, apple pectin and a specialized carrot fiber, and is taken in capsule form. Whole Food Fiber contains oat fiber, beet fiber, rice bran, organic beet (root), apple pectin, organic carrot, organic sweet potato, and carrot fiber, and comes as a powder that can be added to water or shakes, which is a good option for anyone wanting to decrease the number of capsules required on the program. Either option is an excellent fit to support the effectiveness of the Purification Program.

SP Cleanse and SP Green Food can be taken either on an empty stomach or with one of the shakes made with SP Complete or SP Complete Dairy Free. Gastro Fiber and Whole Food Fiber should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 2 hours apart from medications.

While we would not expect interactions between the Purification Program and most medications, it is essential to always discuss dietary changes and new supplements with the prescribing physician.

By following the Standard Process Purification Program, you will be working toward sustained, long-term weight management. The ideal weight-management system is not a quick fix – it’s a long-term commitment. You will need to make lifestyle changes that will continue long after the purification process has been completed.

Here are some tips to help you stay on track:

  • Plan your strategy before you leave home.
  • When choosing a restaurant, select one that serves foods on the recommended list. This will curb temptation.
  • When traveling, bring along a cooler packed with water bottles, fresh fruit, and sliced raw vegetables.
  • When attending a social gathering, bring a dish to pass that fits your stage of the program, like a fruit/veggie tray or chicken kabobs.
  • For added convenience, SP Complete and Whey Pro Complete are available in single-serving packets.

These vegetables were selected for their high nutritive value and their capacity to support detoxification.

You may be fatigued because your body may require a higher amount of protein during purification and post-purification. Ask your health care professional about adding Whey Pro Complete to your program.

Remember to drink plenty of water, at least 64 ounces per day. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits with high fiber content. Eating one beet daily encourages regular bowel movements.

Whey is a protein source found in SP Complete, and lactose is a nutrient found in the whey. There is approximately ½ gram of lactose per shake. Try SP Complete Dairy Free if lactose is a concern.

If you suspect you are having a reaction to a specific food, refrain from eating it, and consult your health care professional about how to incorporate alternative food sources.

You and your health care professional should work together during post-purification. Your health care professional may recommend supplements that are specific to your health concern.
